Most travellers arrive in Kandy with a day or two spare and one big question: how do we fit it all in?
Kandy is the perfect base for it, because it sits at the meeting point of two Sri Lankas - the cultural heartland of ancient temples and sacred relics, and the highland wilderness of cloud forests and mountain trails. You do not have to choose between them. Here is the 3-day itinerary I put together for guests who want the best of both.
Day 1: Cultural Heart of Kandy
Ease into the highlands with a gentler, culture-focused first day - perfect while you adjust to the altitude and pace.
- Morning: Start with a walk around Kandy Lake and a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), the most revered Buddhist site in the country. Time it well and you can witness a puja ceremony.
- Midday: Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya - 60 hectares of towering palms, orchids, and giant bamboo.
- Afternoon: Consider the Three Temple Loop, an easy, beautiful walk connecting the Gampola-era temples of Gadaladeniya, Embekke, and Lankathilaka through paddy fields and village lanes. It is culture and a gentle leg-stretch in one.
- Evening: Catch a traditional Kandyan dance and drumming performance in the city.
This day is built around our Kandy City Tour and Three Temple Loop.
Day 2: Into the Mountains
Now for the main event - a full day in the highlands. Your choice depends on your appetite for adventure:
- For the full wilderness experience: The Knuckles Cloud Forest Trek. A UNESCO World Heritage site, misty pygmy forests, hidden waterfalls to swim in, and endemic wildlife. This is a challenging, unforgettable day.
- For big views with less commitment: The Hanthana Ridge Hike - tea estates, pine forest, and panoramic views over Kandy, closer to the city.
Either way, you will be picked up early from your hotel and returned by evening, tired and happy. Bring layers, water, and a swimsuit if you are heading to the Knuckles.
Want more? Swap this single day for our 2-day, 1-night overnight camping trek and turn the 3-day plan into an unforgettable 4 days.
Day 3: The Cultural Triangle - Sigiriya & Dambulla
For your final day, head north to Sri Lanka's ancient Cultural Triangle.
- Morning: Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock, the 5th-century royal citadel often called the eighth wonder of the world. Ancient frescoes, the mirror wall, water gardens, and a summit view worth every step.
- Afternoon: Visit the nearby Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of cave shrines filled with centuries-old Buddha statues and murals.
- Optional add-on: If wildlife is calling, swap or extend into a jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla, where great herds of elephants gather - one of Asia's finest wildlife spectacles.
Explore this day through our Sigiriya Lion Rock and Wildlife Safari tours.
How to Adapt This Itinerary
- Only have 2 days? Combine Day 1 (culture) with Day 2 (a trek) and save Sigiriya for another trip.
- Prefer a slower pace? Spread these three themes over four or five days with more rest and swimming time.
- Travelling with mixed fitness levels? We can run a gentler trek for part of the group while others take on the Knuckles - just ask.
The beauty of basing yourself in Kandy is flexibility. Tell us what you love - mountains, temples, wildlife, or all three - and we will shape the days around it.
