When people think of Sri Lankan wildlife, they picture elephants and leopards on the plains. But up in the Knuckles cloud forest, a different, quieter kind of wilderness is at work - one full of creatures that exist nowhere else on the planet.
This is one of the island's great biodiversity hotspots, and part of why it earned UNESCO World Heritage status. As a guide, watching a first-time visitor spot an endemic lizard basking on a mossy branch never gets old. Here is what lives in these mountains, and how to give yourself the best chance of seeing it.
Why the Knuckles Is So Rich in Life
The range's magic comes from its isolation and its microclimates. In a single day's walk you pass through dry grasslands, dense wet cloud forest, montane pygmy forest, streams, and open plateaus. Each of these is a distinct habitat, and over millions of years, species evolved to fit them - many becoming endemic, found only in these hills.
The persistent mist and cool temperatures create conditions that simply do not exist in the lowlands, which is why so much of what you meet up here is unique.
Reptiles: The Stars of the Show
The Knuckles is a paradise for reptile enthusiasts, and its lizards are the creatures guests remember most.
- The leaf-nosed lizard (Ceratophora tennentii): This is the prize sighting. Found only in the Knuckles and nowhere else on Earth, males carry a strange leaf-shaped horn on the nose. Guests who spot one rarely forget it.
- The pygmy lizard (Cophotis ceylonica) and crestless lizard (Calotes liocephalus): Small, superbly camouflaged, and a real thrill to spot in the leaf litter and low branches.
- Geckos and skinks: Numerous species, several endemic, hiding in bark crevices and under stones.
Amphibians: Life in the Mist
Cloud forests are heaven for frogs, and the Knuckles has an extraordinary diversity of them - including tiny shrub frogs (Pseudophilautus), a group with many species unique to Sri Lanka's central hills. On a damp evening the forest positively sings with them. Some breed directly on land rather than in water, an adaptation to the constantly wet environment.
Birds: A Birdwatcher's Highland
The Knuckles is a fantastic spot for birding, with a healthy list of Sri Lankan endemics among the residents. Keep your eyes and ears open for:
- Yellow-eared bulbul and Sri Lanka white-eye, highland endemics common in the range
- Sri Lanka blue magpie - a stunning blue-and-chestnut endemic, one of the country's most sought-after birds
- Dull-blue flycatcher and various babblers working the understorey
- Raptors soaring over the ridges and grasslands
Early morning is prime time - bring binoculars if you have them.
Mammals and Other Life
Mammals here are shyer and mostly active at dawn, dusk, or night, so sightings take patience and luck:
- Purple-faced langur, an endemic monkey, moving through the canopy
- Barking deer (muntjac) and wild boar in the forest
- Giant squirrels and, if you are very fortunate, signs of smaller nocturnal mammals
You will also meet the forest's smaller residents in abundance - dazzling butterflies, dragonflies over the streams, and, yes, the leeches (which are simply part of a healthy wet forest - and easily managed with the protection we provide).
How to Maximise Your Sightings
- Go slow and quiet. Wildlife reveals itself to patient, low-noise groups. Rushing the trail means missing almost everything.
- Trek early. Dawn is the most active window for birds and reptiles alike.
- Look low as well as up. So much of the action is in the leaf litter, on tree trunks, and along stream edges - not just in the canopy.
- Bring binoculars and a zoom lens. Many of these creatures are small and shy.
- Go with a guide who knows where to look. This is the single biggest factor. A trained eye will spot a camouflaged lizard or name a distant birdcall in an instant - sightings you would walk straight past on your own.
Please Watch Responsibly
This wildlife survives because the forest is protected. Never touch, feed, or handle the animals, keep to the trails, and take nothing but photographs. These species are precious precisely because they are found only here.
